In 7th grade art class my teacher told me that the lake I drew amongst the mountains and a stand of pines, was standing on its side and therefore wrong. It took me decades to realize that the teaching was wrong, and to realize that a lake standing on its side is more interesting than a lake like all other lakes. I suppose I’m a bit like that lake, I fit into the research world that I later inhabited post-college and have loved my work all these years, being inquisitive by nature, but the artist inside me was dormant. Nearly two years ago my mother passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, and in sympathy for my grief and loneliness, a good friend invited me to an art class that she and her husband were to attend. We arrived only to find the class had been cancelled. But the library hosting the class allowed us regardless full use of the art room, and there in Pine Valley CA I created my first painting since my sideways lake. I’ve been painting ever since.
